President's Message

Hello everyone!  Spring is almost here, so it’s a perfect time to get out and participate in some of the upcoming ASHRAE events!

The Annual Spring Golf Tournament is coming up on Monday April 29th at Longwood Golf Club.  Be sure to mark your calendars and plan to attend.  There is always a great turnout and it’s an important fundraiser for our organization.

Last month, ASHRAE had its Worldwide Annual Meeting in Dallas.  The Houston Chapter was well represented.   I would like to thank everyone who participated.

We also had a fantastic turnout at our February luncheon.  David Howell gave a presentation on ethics.  If you are still in need of your PDH certificate, please let me know.  Ken Loudermilk (Trox USA) gave a presentation on Chilled beams during the lunch. Our next meeting will be held on March 20th at the HESS Building.  Tom Watson, the ASHRAE Society President will be the guest speaker.

The Board of Governors and all of the Committee Chairs are working very hard this year on our presentation for the Golden Gavel.  The last time the Houston Chapter won this prestigious award was in 1972.  It’s given to the best all-around Chapter within the Region.  I believe that we deserve this award, and I have been working hard to showcase everything the Houston Chapter has accomplished this year.  I want to thank everyone who has helped in this endeavor.

I welcome everyone to attend the Chapters Regional Conference (the CRC) in Austin this year.  It will be held April 18-20 at the Hyatt Regency on Lady Bird Lake.  Registration has already begun and space will fill up quickly.  I hope to see you there!  Show your support for all the Chapters as they are recognized and honored for their accomplishments for the year.

As always, I would like to thank all of you for your contribution to making the Houston Chapter such a great success!

Take care,

Alan Neely / 2012-2013 ASHRAE Houston President

ASHRAE Houston Chapter Resolutions

Submitted By Alan Neely / 2012-2013 ASHRAE Houston Chapter President

State Of Texas Senate Resolution #223

We have received a signed Proclamation/Resolution honoring ASHRAE and  Engineer’s Week from The Texas Senate signed by the Lt. Governor David Dewhurst and Senator Dan Patrick, to name a few.  We also have some pictures with Senator Patrick handing it over.  He sent his personal thanks to ASHRAE and its members for all that we do.  We will be in receipt of the signed Proclamation from Governor Rick Perry next week, hopefully with more pictures of the ceremonial hand-over.  By the end of this week, we will also have the signed Proclamation from the Houston City Council, which includes all Council Members plus the Mayor of Houston.  I will be in attendance for that ceremony and will have pictures to showcase this event, as well.

Papers Sought for First International Conference on Energy, Indoor Environment in Hot Climates
ATLANTA - Papers are being sought for a conference focused on energy and indoor air quality in hot and humid climates.

Organized by ASHRAE, the Qatar Oryx Chapter and the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute, the First International Conference on Energy and Indoor Environment for Hot Climates takes place Feb. 24-26, 2014, in Doha, Qatar. It is endorsed by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)

Abstracts (400 words in length) are due April 30, 2013. If accepted, papers are due May 15, 2013. Authors of accepted papers are responsible for travel and registration. Hotel accommodations are free for authors presenting papers. Submittal information can be found at

The Conference provides a forum for discussion of the latest research and development in the field of indoor environmental quality in high ambient temperature climates.

Rising energy demand, costs and the associated environmental problems are causing increased emphasis on the design of energy efficient HVAC&R systems, according to Walid Chakroun, conference chair.

"This Conference sets the path for better understanding the integration of energy efficiency and indoor air quality in high ambient temperature regions," he said. "The impact of low-energy design on occupant health in different building sectors, for both developed and developing economies, is the focus."

Topics include but are not limited to:

.   Indoor Air Quality Systems

.   Lessons Learned from IAQ Systems in Developing Countries

.   Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating Systems

.   Sustainability in Buildings

.   Energy and Sustainable Development

.   Healthy Indoor Environment Protocols

.   Renewable Energy Technologies

.   Indoor Environmental Pollution Sources

.   Air Cleaner Performance

.   Advances in Filter Materials

.   Low Emitting Materials for Better IAQ

.   Standards, Codes and Regulations

In addition, panel discussions are included with experts and decision makers where recommendations and ideas for research can be generated for better design and preserving healthy environments. Also, several keynote speeches will focus on different aspects of indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a building technology society with more than 50,000 members worldwide. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow's built environment today.

We are proud to say that the Houston Young Engineer’s in ASHRAE Chapter is the largest YEA chapter in the U.S. and continues to grow daily.

Just 3 years ago Houston created a YEA chapter, and since then we have grown significantly and more than we could’ve imagined.  We have grown not only in the number of members, but in the development and progress of the group and chapter as a whole.

Our goal is for everyone 35 and younger to get the full experience of being a young engineer and worker in this industry and in ASHRAE.   Being a member of YEA is a great way to expand your knowledge, get involved, meet fellow young engineers and workers in the industry, and have fun along the way!

We welcome all those who are 35 and younger in the industry to join us for the monthly meetings and happy hours.  The events will be posted monthly in the HAR.

Please let Christine Porterfield or Brennan Vierra know if you would like more information on becoming a member:
