Most chapter members are familiar with refrigeration compressors using HFC and HCFC refrigerants for comfort cooling. But did you know that Houston is home to the largest concentration of process refrigeration in the United States? Open drive screw and centrifugal compressors using exotic refrigerants like ammonia, propane, and other hydrocarbons in process refrigeration systems for:
- Hydrocarbon distillation
- Compression
- Processes throughout the petrochemical process
ASHRAE Houston Chapter arranged a unique opportunity to learn about process compressor technology at this month's chapter meeting.

What
Glen Mueller is a thirty year veteran of the process refrigeration industry who is presenting an overview of where industrial compressors are used and how they work. You will learn how compressors operate at conditions as low as -160 degrees F, oil management, refrigerant types, cascade systems and much more.
Glen is a graduate mechanical engineer from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a District Sales Manager for Johnson Controls and responsible for sales of the York and Frick process refrigeration products. Glen also volunteers at the Kairos Prison Ministry.
After the technical presentation, student chapter members will be recognized for the achievements and scholarships awarded.
BONUS - Industrial Compressor Rebuild Shop Tour
Johnson Controls' process compressor rebuild shop is in Houston where multi-stage centrifugal and screw compressors are refurbished and repaired. The high bay facility also rebuilds industrial chillers and absorption machines.
Johnson Controls is opening the compressor rebuild shop to March meeting attendees. Please arrive promptly at 5 pm for an opportunity to see the compressors Glen is describing during the dinner meeting. We encourage you to bring a hard hat and safety glasses,.
