Course Description

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) declared a "code red" for humanity. Many countries, states, and cities have net zero targets by 2050 (or 2040 with the latest IPCC report) that include whole life carbon programs on both embodied and operational carbons. CIBSE published TM 65 that addressed embodied carbon in HVAC systems. How does ASHRAE lead and align with the whole life carbon effort?

As an introduction to discussions at the upcoming 2022 Winter Conference in Las Vegas, the ASHRAE Task Force on Building Decarbonization (TFBD) Training and Education Working Group is pleased to offer a webinar centered on the topics of Embodied Carbon and Standards and Codes Related to Building Decarbonization. The speakers are subject matter experts with active roles on the Task Force.

 Luke Leung, P.Eng., Fellow ASHRAE, LEED® Fellow, BEMP, Distinguished Lecturer is the ASHRAE Task Force for Building Decarbonization Work Group Leader on Embodied Carbon/LCA; The commercial team leader on the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force, LEED® Fellow, Chair of ASHRAE’s Environmental Health Committee; Co-Chair of BOMA Toronto Health Task Force. He holds an MBA from University of Chicago; MS, BAE and is a Centennial Fellow from The Pennsylvania State University Architectural Engineering Department. He is a past Chair of ASHRAE TC 9.12 on Tall Buildings and former Director of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Illinois Chapter.

Mr. Leung is a Director of the Sustainability Engineering Studio for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP. His work expands globally and includes Burj Khalifa, currently the world’s tallest man-made structure, as well as General Motors’ Global Headquarters, Roche Diagnostic in Indianapolis, the Embassy of Ottawa in China, the Rolex Tower in Dubai and the Pertamina Tower, the tallest and largest net-zero building on Earth.

Terry Townsend, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE

Terry E. Townsend, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, is president, Townsend Engineering Inc., Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Panama City, Florida. In 2006-07, he served as president of ASHRAE, where he focused the Society’s efforts on The ASHRAE Promise: A Sustainable Future, highlighting ASHRAE’s work in sustainability in the building environment. His achievements as president include launching ASHRAE’s first ever certification program, accelerating and expanding the Advanced Energy Design Guide series, setting more stringent savings for ASHRAE’s energy standard, and proving resources on how ASHRAE can minimize the impact of its meetings on the environment.
